“A
Song for Alice” represents impressions of Alice Stuart,
singer and guitar player who Nathan would listen to at the Freight and
Salvage
Coffee House on San Pablo in the 1970s.
“Penelope
Waltz” reflects a hopeless infatuation with a tall
beautiful lady who worked at Lundberg’s Guitar on Dwight Way.
“Shamen
Garden” speaks of an almost romance with Nathan’s
friend who worked for Rolling Stone magazine as a photographer.
“My
Grandfather” relates stories from his mother about his
grandfather who left escaped the Motherland in 1906 and settled in
Massachusetts. (Written in 2013).
After graduating from UC Berkeley with a degree in philosophy,
Nathan
Spooner made his living playing street music on Telegraph Avenue from
1970 to
1975. After
40 years of carrying these songs in suitcases through
Berkeley, San Francisco, Oregon, Alaska and back to California, Nathan
finally
settled in a great location on the Central Coast of California to
record and
release this album of missives that captures some of the adventurous
spirit of
those times. This collection includes
tales of true love, friendships and adventure.
Some songs are from the 1970-1980 era, some from last month.
