Poetry

                  Lingering

                                                                  James Thomas Hazard

Soft Egyptian cotton and the sound of your breathing

Under covers and the old hours of night,

Talking as if in a trance, peacefully dreaming

Our faces framed by a pale patch of moonlight

I could stay right here like this and never leave,

The recitation of thoughts about the past

Are the ringing bell tones of chimes and the prayers we believe

For time is always the same and change is a mask

We don’t live in the age of long ago

This is the lucid dream, the knowledge of youth

And yet no force of will can make it so

It comes by act of grace arrayed as truth

Whatever happened, it didn’t happen to us

That is why we’ll always be together

As we like to say, like dust to dust

In the lingering feeling of love that lasts forever
